It’s 1982 and twelve year old Jorani Pheng is where she never thought she’d be: free from the Khmer Rouge who ravaged her home of Cambodia, living in an American apartment with her Ma and brother Khean, and separated from her sister, Seyha.

Jorani begins to work under the elderly Mrs. Nhim at her restaurant, determined to send Seyha the money she needs to get out of the refugee camp. Jorani soon finds out that money isn’t the only issue, however. Every day is a battle against language barriers, being misunderstood, and bullying from her classmates.

And the longer the sisters are apart, the more something becomes clear. No matter how much she has tried to oppress it, the memories and pain of her time under the Khmer Rouge are becoming a bigger threat for the roots she and her family are fighting so hard to put down. In order to save the things that she stands to lose, Jorani must learn to face all that she has lost.

Status: Second Draft Complete. Shelved

Genre: Historical Contemporary

Theme Verse: Proverbs 24: 10-12

Blurb: Theodore Sullivan believes that change is to be avoided; just like blood, social interaction, and Beatles music. But then comes the day when his estranged, workaholic father falls off a roof.

Now burdened with the task of helping his disabled father, dodging his fiery veteran grandfather’s attempts to tear the family apart, and ignoring the ache of his old friend’s rebellious changes, Theo tries to pull through and return things the way they were: Unchanged, unopened, and unaddressed.

He fights to hide his father’s deteriorating mental condition and searches for a cure by seeking out his father’s past. But as his friend’s life becomes more and more entwined with his own, keeping the changes and discoveries hidden is beginning to cost him things he’s not sure he’s willing to give.

And waiting for him under the surface of it all is the truth he won’t be willing to hear.

Set in 1964 and woven with flashbacks from the view of a Concentration Camp officer, Those Who Broke Us is a tale of change and confession – tearing down misconceptions, and bringing healing to others.
